How do I activate my HRA?

You must meet the HRA eligibility requirements and enroll in a qualifying Medicare plan.

During your first year, enroll through one of these channels to activate your HRA:

Once you are enrolled and meet eligibility requirements, the Plan funds your HRA account through Via Benefits.

If you or your spouse become eligible for Medicare midyear, contact Via Benefits to confirm when allocations begin and how the amount is calculated.

What if I already have an HRA and want to keep my current Medicare plan?

If your current Medicare plan continues to be offered and you do not want to make changes, you generally do not need to take action. Your coverage may continue, and Via Benefits will continue administering your HRA.

If you want to change coverage, you need to review options during Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7).

After your first year, you may use another licensed Medicare agent for enrollment assistance, but Via Benefits will still administer your HRA.

What expenses can my HRA reimburse?

Your HRA can reimburse eligible out-of-pocket healthcare expenses and insurance premiums not covered by other health coverage, subject to Plan rules.

Common eligible expenses include:

  • Medicare and other eligible insurance premiums, including Medicare Part B, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement (Medigap), and Medicare Part D prescription drug plan premiums. When you enroll in a qualifying plan through Via Benefits, eligible premiums can be reimbursed automatically each month
  • Doctor visits, hospital services, and physical therapy
  • Prescription drugs and eligible over-the-counter drugs
  • Dental, hearing (including hearing aids), and vision care (including eyeglasses and contact lenses)
  • Eligible medical supplies

Other expenses that qualify under Section 213(d) of the Internal Revenue Code may also be eligible. All reimbursements must meet HRA Plan requirements.

What happens to my unused HRA balance?

Unused funds roll over from month to month and year to year. They do not expire as long as you remain eligible for and enrolled in the HRA Plan.
